This is done mostly, by using a camera to capture images of what is visiting the feeding station or kitty buffet, that you have set up.
The best camera I have found to do this is, the Bushnell Digital Camera - Trail Scout 3.0 MP. The camera can also be set up in areas where you are receiving sighting calls, in order to confirm the sighting.

This camera, though a little pricy, offers you everything you need, full color images, which are a must, because there could be many cats where you are conducting your surveillance, and because cats can sometimes appear similar. KenyaThis leaves no doubt if it is your cat the camera has captured. It also provides another must, Infrared sensor that is motion activated. This means pictures that are taken at night will be easily discernable.  The Trail Scout camera only takes pictures when something moves, therefore saving valuable battery life. In addition, you can place the camera up to 30 feet away. This is a great tool to use when you cannot be there to conduct your own surveillance. So, in my opinion, it is worth the price it costs, to know for sure if it is your pet or not that you may be receiving sightings about. This way you are not wasting valuable time scouting out someone else's missing pet.
